Are you starting to see lines and folds around your nose and mouth? We have good news for you! In December 2016, the FDA approved two new hyaluronic acid dermal fillers by Galderma called Restylane Defyne and Refyne. These innovative next-generation dermal fillers feature Galderma’s cutting-edge XpresHAn Technology. This new cross-linked hyaluronic acid forms a flexible gel, making these fillers perfect for use in nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

What’s Different About Restylane Defyne and Refyne?

These new Restylane injectable fillers are unique. Restylane Defyne and Refyne effectively smooth moderate-to-severe facial folds like other facial fillers. However, the unique properties of these gels also work to smooth wrinkles while still allowing for more natural facial expressions and movements.

Uses for Restylane Defyne and Refyne

Restylane Defyne and Refyne were designed for use in the mid-to-deep dermis layer of the skin to treat moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds; this includes marionette lines, which run from the corners of the mouth to the chin, and nasolabial folds, which run from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Both fillers feature Galderma’s proprietary XpresHAn Technology. XpresHAn processes the hyaluronic acid particles to allow different sized particles to cross-link with one another. This effectively resolves a common issue among some fillers that results in a stiffer gel that may impede natural facial expressions and movements.

Restylane Defyne

Although Restyane Defyne and Refyne are very similar, FDA-approved Defyne is a slightly firmer dermal filler. This makes it best suited for facial folds and lines that are very deep. Defyne is meant to be injected into the mid-to-deep dermis. Once it has been injected into the desired area, it may be massaged and contoured to mold naturally to the surrounding tissue. In this way, Restylane Defyne can be used to achieve very customized results, as the gel is very supportive. Many times, Restylane Defyne is indicated for those whose facial folds and wrinkles were a bit too deep to be effectively treated by Refyne or other injectable fillers.

Restylane Refyne

Restylane Refyne is similar to Defyne. However, the hyaluronic acid gel formulation in this product is a bit more flexible than that of Restylane Defyne. Refyne is better for treating moderate-to-severe facial folds and wrinkles. Although it is also designed to be injected into the mid-to-deep dermis, Refyne works best on folds and wrinkles that are relatively superficial. FDA-approved Restylane Refyne can be massaged, contoured and molded after injection. This allows for greater precision and control for superior results.

Some patients benefit the most from using a targeted combination of Restylane Defyne and Refyne; however, others will find that other filler formulations will still work best for them.

How Do Restylane Defyne and Refyne Differ from Other Fillers?

Many popular dermal fillers are designed to address aging effects on the face, including Juvederm, Sculptra, and Radiesse. However, Restylane Defyne and Refyne are specifically intended for laugh lines, which include nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Refyne and Defyne also produce results that last for up to one year.

This does not mean that Defyne and Refyne are right for everyone. Some patients will still see better results with our other fillers, like those listed above. A consultation with one of our aesthetic injection specialists will help determine which fillers are right for your needs.
