Varicose veins can occur anywhere on the body, though they are most commonly found on the legs. These veins appear enlarged and tend to sport a blue or red hue that resides just under the skin. This condition is caused by damaged valves that exist within the veins. These valves cause blood to leak back into the veins where it pools and produces this effect. Women older than 45 are most susceptible to this condition.

Varicose veins can be itchy, painful and embarrassing, but they can be treated. Sclerotherapy is one such treatment method. During this procedure, our skilled provider will inject a salt solution, or other FDA-approved agent into the affected vein with a very fine needle. The solution will make the walls of the vein sticky, thereby allowing blood to clot. The body will then dissolve the damaged vein and it will disappear from sight.

The procedure is never performed on pregnant women and rarely performed on those with a history of blood clots. However, your clinician will evaluate your case on an individual basis.

Before the Procedure

An examination will be needed before you undergo sclerotherapy. Your health care provider will then tell you whether to avoid certain foods or medications prior to the procedure. He or she may also ask that you abstain from applying body lotion to the affected areas before treatment.

After The Procedure

You should be able to resume most normal activities shortly after the procedure. You will likely wear compression stockings for a few days prior to surgery, as they can help the vein walls stick together. You may encounter mild bruising following sclerotherapy, though this should disappear within a week to 10 days.
