The 5 Reasons You Can’t Have the Lips You Saw on Instagram

We’ve all been there.

Scrolling through our feeds at an ungodly hour because that elusive yet glorious shut-eye evades us, and there it is… that one photo that makes us swoon.

And not a romantic swoon, but an appreciation swoon. A pout so perfect that it basically gleams from your screen. Or that could just be your screen brightness, which you should totally turn down because that’s really terrible for your eyes.

Either way, you’ve spotted them. The lips you were *meant* to have.

So you make the appointment, you are itching with excitement, and then it happens. Your Injector says those dreaded words…. “well, I can’t promise you those lips.”

Excuse me? Aren’t you supposed to be a professional? Don’t you do this day in and day out? Why can’t you deliver what I ask for?!

Well! We’re here to tell you that, yes, you have indeed found a professional- especially if they warn you that your results may look different than the photo you presented them with.

In fact, you actually should look for an Injector that sets you up with proper expectations from the start. One that warns you that you may look different from your aspiration photo, but also why that’s perfectly okay and how everything will be fine.

So, why can’t you have the lips you saw on Instagram?

Here’s the 5 reasons why:

  1. Your lips are unique
  2. Lip filler is non-surgical
  3. Swelling can be deceiving
  4. Volume *should* take time
  5. We want you to still look like you!
  1. Your lips are unique

And we’re not just telling you you’re special so we can inject the way we want to inject. Your lips are quite literally unique.

Anatomically and physiologically, your lips are made up of a complex relationship between muscles, skin, lymphatic drainage, nerve endings and more.

Some people have very distinct vermillion borders and Cupid’s bows, others just simply don’t have those things in their genetic makeup. And there’s nothing wrong with that!

Some people have proportionate upper and lower lips, others have small and ‘short’ upper lips, and others have naturally voluminous lower lips. The list goes on and on. The point is, everyone has a different composition. This composition determines what dermal filler will look like when it’s injected.

Yes, we know what you’re thinking, skill and expertise definitely come in to play here, but even the most skilled of Injectors cannot physically alter the structure of face. Which brings us to our next point…

  1. Lip filler is non-surgical

Dermal filler is a hyaluronic-acid based gel that is injected into certain areas of the face (for the purposes of this article- the lips) and its purpose is to replace or restore lost volume. Lip filler is also temporary and lasts anywhere from 6 months to over a year.

The reason that your Injector may not be able to give you the lips of your dreams may simply be because structurally your anatomy is just different than the person in your photo.

This doesn’t mean that a skilled and expert Injector can’t deliver a beautiful pout that will also leave you jumping with joy, it just means that your inspo photo may physically be unattainable without surgical intervention.

That being said, surgery is no joke. It requires anesthesia, down-time, and it’s permanent.

Non-surgical dermal filler requires no anesthesia, causes minimal swelling, and can be manipulated post-injection. It also is meant to enhance your existing features, not change or alter them.

  1. Swelling can be deceiving

Truth time. A lot of lip injection photos are taken immediately after the injections have taken place.

This means that a lot of that volume and definition you’re seeing is straight-up from inflammation to the lip tissue. While this isn’t necessarily bad, and there is a place for these types of photos, that is not what that pair of lips will look like after a few weeks. The swelling will subside and a lot of that ‘puff’ will disappear, so basing your ‘ideal’ on wounded lips is not sustainable.

If your Injector says that your lips can look like your photo, but only for a few days, this is what they mean.

  1. Volume *should* take time

If you have fairly thin lips and your Injector promises you the pout of Angelina Jolie in one visit- run, do not walk, out of that office.

Significant increases in volume should take multiple syringes of product and at Skin by Lovely, we prefer to inject only one syringe at a time. This allows our Injectors to tailor each lip enhancement perfectly to each patient. It should never be a one-size-fits-all approach, and you should never rush injecting that amount of product. We also find that one syringe beautifully suits most of our patient’s natural features, and is a look that is easily maintained during yearly visits.

If more volume is still desired after one appointment, waiting for the swelling to subside allows our Injectors to evaluate how much product your specific features can handle. Injecting additional volume in a separate session also allows for a more natural-looking layering of the dermal filler.

We know that waiting isn’t always the most fun thing in the world, but the phrase ‘you can’t rush perfection’ exists for a reason.

  1. We want you to still look like you!

Possibly the most important reason you can’t have the lips you saw on Instagram is that at the end of the day, we want you to still look like you.

The lips in your inspo photo are gorgeous– no doubt about that. But the truth behind those lips is that an Injector took the unique and individual characteristics of THAT PERSON into account to achieve those beautiful results. Those lips are uniquely and beautifully theirs, and your injected lips will be uniquely and beautifully yours.

At Skin by Lovely we believe that natural-looking is the best-looking, and we find that the best way to achieve such natural-looking results is to honor the beauty of everyone’s unique features.

This takes years of experience to master and Skin by Lovely Injection Specialists are trained to expertly tailor each and every treatment to meet the needs of each and every one of our patients.
