If you’ve ever left your Botox appointment feeling like you could take on the world, you’re not alone. While Botox is best known for softening lines and smoothing out expression wrinkles, there’s growing buzz around its unexpected mood-lifting benefits. And yes, science is backing it up.

What the Research is Saying

Several recent studies suggest that Botox may do more than just refresh your appearance—it might also help improve your mood. A 2021 meta-analysis reviewing multiple randomized trials found that people who received Botox, especially in the frown lines (glabellar region), reported reduced symptoms of depression.

Even more compelling, a large postmarketing safety analysis of over 40,000 treatment reports found significantly fewer signs of depression in patients treated with Botox—no matter the treatment area. Researchers believe that by reducing the brain’s ability to send “frown” feedback through the facial muscles, Botox can subtly shift our emotional tone toward the positive.

But What About Empathy?

You may have heard claims that Botox could affect how we connect emotionally with others. Some early studies explored the idea that if your forehead muscles can’t move as freely, you may be less able to mimic the expressions of others—and therefore may find it harder to emotionally relate.

While it’s an interesting theory, it’s based mostly on facial mimicry tasks performed in lab settings—not real-world conversations. And as a USC and Duke study confirmed, these effects are small and context-dependent.

We Believe in Happy Faces—and Full Expressions

At Skin by Lovely, we aim for results that are beautifully subtle and always true to you. That means no frozen foreheads or overdone looks—just a softer, fresher version of yourself. You’ll still be able to laugh, cry, smirk, and scowl (though maybe with fewer deep lines to show for it).

We believe emotions are a gift. They connect us, guide us, and help us navigate life’s big and small moments. Botox doesn’t take those away. In fact, when used artfully, it can help you show up more confidently for them.
