Botox and Hyperhidrosis: Botox for Excessive Sweating
If you’re one of the many people who suffer from excessive underarm sweating, otherwise termed hyperhidrosis, then you are not alone. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, nearly three percent of people are unable to control their excessive sweating. Common sites include the underarms, palms and soles of the feet. It causes people sweat up to five times as much as normal!
First, let’s review some of the common causes and treatments for hyperhidrosis. Most cases of hyperhidrosis are idiopathic, meaning we don’t know why it occurs. Sometimes the excessive sweating occurs secondary to another medical condition, such as a metabolic condition, oral medications, or temporary illness.
The line of treatments available for excessive sweating include topical prescription strength antiperspirants and a clear liquid aluminum chloride solution called Drysol. The problem with many of these topical treatments is that they may cause redness and irritation in the underarms. The second line treatments include injectable treatments such as Botox, Dysport or Xeomin which typically decrease sweating dramatically for about 6 months.
