PORTLAND, Ore. – When it comes to amateur or professional athletes, many consider their bodies as their temples. Hours are spent on muscle buildup, stamina and physical conditioning. Yet for outdoor athletes, many ignore the most important organ of all: Their skin.

“Outdoor athletes are especially susceptible to skin damage, because of all the hours they spend exposed to the elements. But the sun isn’t the only concern,” said Lovely Laban, GNP-C MSN, co-founder, Skin by Lovely. “Running and outdoor training exhausts their adrenal system and without proper replenishing, it causes accelerated aging of the skin.”

Re-hydrate – with Your Skin in Mind
Skin By Lovely recommends staying away from any sugary sports drinks to get electrolytes. The sugar causes glycation, which can seriously affect skin elasticity and effectively break down the skin’s collagen. Coconut water is a great alternative as a natural electrolyte source.

Sun Blocks get Physical with Double Action UV Protection
Most of the sun blocks considered “sports blocks” on the market are chemical, which are protective but don’t stay on long and can sting the eyes when athletes sweat. Physical blocks hold up longer and literally block the damaging rays of the sun, keeping the skin cool, while fighting the development of sunspots. Athletes can get double the protection with the use of physical UV sunblock of 30 SPF or higher combined with topical antioxidants, such as vitamin C.

Boost Your Skin’s Defense with Food
Athletes are familiar with using foods and supplements to build and repair muscles. Consuming photo-protective foods high in antioxidants and betacarotene can build up the skin’s natural defense from sun damage. Yellow and orange foods such as colored bell peppers and yellow summer squash, as well as dark pigmented foods and berries contain high amounts of anti-oxidants that can boost your skin’s defense.

Keep Clean up Simple
Avoid abrasive cleansers or over-washing which leads to dry, irritated skin. Instead, Laban recommends using micellar water for cleansing the face without stripping oils. After a heavy workout, focus on simple, organic, and real plant nutrient rich cleansers and moisturizers. Look for hyaluronic acid, which is hydrating and anti-inflammatory.

Go Organic
Many athletes and fitness-focused people cast a discerning eye at produce and other commonly consumed items on their grocery list, but don’t think about the actual ingredients that they slather on their skin. For example, paraben, an ingredient found in many popular lotions, is a preservative that has also been found in lymph nodes and breast cancer tumors.. Laban recommends that when approaching skin care products, focus on the most simple, organic, and plant nutrient rich products.
