What is a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS)?

Trust is of the utmost importance when you’re selecting an aesthetic provider. At Skin by Lovely in Santa Monica, CA and Portland, OR, our Aesthetic Injection Specialists are aesthetic nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. A Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) is uniquely qualified to give you the aesthetic treatment you need with their specialized knowledge and skill sets. A CANS certified aesthetic provider is actually a tremendous asset to the cosmetic world – and we’ll tell you why.

Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) Requirements

A Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) must undergo a significant amount of education, training, and experience before receiving their certification. Before becoming a CANS certified provider, registered nurses and nurse practitioners must complete the following steps.

  1. A Registered Nurse (RN) can hold either an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in nursing; a Nurse Practitioner holds a Master’s Degree in nursing. Both must be licensed in their state in ordeCANS Aesthetic Nurse Specialist r to practice, with requirements to obtain and renew licensing varying from state to state.
  2. After obtaining the required degrees and licensing, RNs and NPs can gain employment as Cosmetic Nurses (also known as aesthetic nurses or plastic surgery nurses). Under the supervision of experienced medical aesthetic providers, a cosmetic nurse gains the training and experience necessary to perform aesthetic treatments such as Botox and filler injections on patients.
  3. After two to three years and 1,000 practicing hours as a cosmetic nurse, they can then test to receive CANS certification through the Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board (PSNCB), indicating that they are the best of the best in the field of cosmetic nursing.
  4. Once CANS certification is obtained, nurses are required to recertify every three years after 45 hours of continuing education is completed.
