Like most women (and many men), you’re likely feeling a little discouraged with the way gravity has taken a toll on your once plump, tight, and wrinkle-free face. And for most of us, it doesn’t end there. A sagging jawline, neck, and deeply wrinkled chest are also terribly common with age.
We already know that Botox can be a pretty incredible and natural-looking solution for wrinkles. Dermal fillers are also a godsend when it comes to reversing the signs of aging. From filling in deep folds around the mouth to restoring lost volume in the lips, cheeks, temples, and under the eyes, dermal fillers like Restylane-L, Juvederm Volbella, and Juvederm Voluma can take years off your face – and still allow you to look like you.
But sometimes, Botox and filler aren’t enough. Whether it’s a result of dramatic weight loss or simply just getting older, there are patients who lack the structure, support, and volume in their face that’s necessary for fillers to make a desired difference in their appearance. These patients need a “framework” to which Hyaluronic Acid fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, etc.) can be layered on top.
And that is where Sculptra comes in.
1. What is Sculptra exactly?
Sculptra is an injectable liquid made of Poly-L-Lactic Acid. It’s the synthetic form of lactic acid, which your body produces naturally following exercise. It is perfectly safe, FDA-approved, and contains absolutely no animal by-products or human DNA.
2. How Does Sculptra Work?
Sculptra acts as a bio-activator and extremely powerful collagen stimulator. It stimulates your own collagen, allowing tissue to volumize gradually. Over time, the Poly-L-Lactic Acid dissipates as your own tissue takes its place. Since the product triggers your body to build its own collagen, results are not immediate and can take anywhere from 4-6 months.
3. Who is a Good Candidate for Treatment?
If you’re concerned with hollowness and/or loss of volume due to aging, weight loss, etc. you’re most likely a candidate for Sculptra. While most Sculptra patients are middle-aged, men and women as young as 25 and as old as 75 have experienced success from treatment too. We require a quick consultation prior to treatment to be sure that Sculptra is the right treatment for you.
4. What Areas can be Treated?
Sunken cheeks and temples are by far the most common areas treated. However, many patients see great benefits from Sculptra when injected in the chin and the jawline too. Even more, many women are choosing to reverse the signs of aging on their chests by having Sculptra injected in their chest wrinkles and folds.
5. How Much Does Sculptra Cost & How Much Will I Need?
A complimentary 20-minute consultation is required to determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment. From there, vials are $900 each. The general rule of thumb for Sculptra is one vial per decade of life. So if you’re in your 40’s, you will most likely need 4 vials. There are exceptions to this rule depending upon volume loss.
Skin by Lovely requires full payment upon booking a Sculptra appointment. This is because the solution must be mixed 1 week prior to the appointment and if it is not used, we have to dispose it.
Here’s a great perk – patients can pre-book for Sculptra treatment – meaning if you book your 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) treatment session upon completing your first sculptra treatment, you’ll get 10% off the following treatment.
*It’s important to note that a maximum of 2 vials can be injected per treatment. So patients should expect to come in for at least 2 treatments, with 6 weeks between each treatment.
6. When Will I See Results?
Results are not immediate. Results generally take 4-6 months, depending upon a variety of factors, like volume loss and age. Patients will continue seeing changes through the 9th month, and at that time full results are expected.
Sculptra is not for patients who need instant gratification. But if you can be patient, the results are absolutely worth the wait. Just ask any Sculptra patient or check out some before and after photos and you’ll see for yourself.
7. How Long Does Sculptra Last?
Sculptra will last 2-3 years once the series of treatments are completed. So while it is a bit more costly than H.A. fillers, patients often justify spending a little more for the time in which they can enjoy results. Most fillers only last a year at the most so Sculptra is considered a great investment.
8. What is the Downtime?
Technically, there’s no actual “downtime.” It’s an out-patient treatment that won’t take much more than an hour to perform. When finished, most patients feel that they can go on about their normal day activities. Like H.A. fillers, you can experience some swelling at the injection sites that will generally subside in less than a week. Mild to moderate bruising is also common. Tenderness, itching, and redness are other common side-effects.
If you’re experiencing a substantial loss of volume in your cheeks or temples or you’re looking to get rid of the folds and wrinkles in your chest, Sculptra just might be the solution you’ve been looking for. Perhaps H.A. fillers aren’t giving you the results they once did – Sculptra could do wonders for you and “breathe some life” back into your face.
